A nice way to burn 9 hours

Here's a a Photoshop pencil drawing of Moroni atop the Salt Lake City Temple. It took me precisely 9 stinking hours to complete. Dang. It might take a while to learn how to use this software. I could see a whole semester at college devoted to learning this stuff.

9 other things I could have done in 9 hours:

1. Driven from Tucson to Provo
2. Watch Pride and Prejudice with my wife 4.5 times and die during the third showing.
3. Eaten 108 corndogs. (n=12x9)
4. Swim the English Channel in a pretty good time.
5. Jumped rope and burned 10800 calories thus losing a whopping 3.5 lbs. (n=1200x9;10800/3000=x)
6. Watched 18 episodes of Gumby from Ruth's prized Gumby Boxed Set.
7. Played Stairway to Heaven on the guitar 7 times.
8. Ride my bike from Sun Valley to Burley. (equivalent to riding from Tacoma to Ellensburg)
9. Flown from LA to Borneo in a Boeing 747.

They do have a class for photoshop! Travis took it actually at TCC for jump start. You did a very lovely job on the art. I hope it doesn't take you 9 more hours to do another!

Hi, Unca Brent

Ah, fun with Photoshop.

Are you looking to use it as a design tool, a photo manipulation tool, or a painting program?

Here are some sites with Photoshop tutorials:

http://www.phong.com/tutorials/

The ConceptArt.org photoshop forums:

http://conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=78

FARP has resources too:

http://www.elfwood.com/farp/art.html

About.com also often has decent tutorials.

http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/photoshop/Adobe_Photoshop_Resources.htm

(You'll have to pick through them and find what works for you.)

I mostly use Photoshop for painting, personally, although it's a valuable design tool as well.

Thanks Lis!

Are you in Seattle now?

Yup. We live in Capitol Hill, which is within walking distance to downtown. Also walking distance to a lot of restaurants and nifty things. We've already skibbled around and seen a few of the various Seattle neighbourhoods such as Ballard and Fremont, and we took a tour (one of my friend's friends is a captain of the Argosy tours and got us on for free and let me steer the boat) of the Ballard Locks and Lake Union. So we're having a good ol' time. (Pictures at my flickr account under the name Pixelfish.)

Hey Brent Hope, It's your neighbor across the street, Allison . . . What version of Photoshop are you trying to learn? I just started dabbling in Photoshop myself and wish I knew what I was doing. I am using Photoshop Elements 6.0. I'll have to let you know if I learn anything cool!

Well technically you'd have to play stairway roughly 67 times to get 9 hours. The song is only 8 minutes long. Unless you're recreating the performance in berlin when it was almost 15 minutes long. In that case, you would have to play it 36 times.

I was wondering about that too. (The time it takes to play Stairway to Heaven.)

But it might depend on how good he was. Maybe he can't sight read tabs.

Like normally I read really fast, and could probably read 2-3 books in nine hours, but currently I'm trying to read in German, so nine hours would probably only get me a third of the way through the book.

Maybe its like that.

Or maybe he knows the secret Arlo Guthrie version of Stairway to Heaven with the Alices Restaurant crossover. Or possibly Stairway to Heaven as rendered by Wagner. That would probably take nine hours.

Lis, that is insane. I laughed my head off!!

No it takes me 9 hours to play it 7 times because I have a hostess ding dong in each hand while I do it.
